Organisation of Proffessionally Trained Ethisists in Eastern Africa
The Makerere Center for Applied Ethics (MACAE) is an autonomous NGO based in Kampala, Uganda, loosely affiliated to Makerere University. MACAE is the only organization of professionally trained ethicists in Eastern Africa.

MACAE argues that the careful defense of basic normative theories, whether secular or religious, that justify a model of local, national, or global development, is an essential element in responsible and sustainable development. For example, such normative theories appeal to social justice, human rights, basic needs, the ethics of care, human virtues and vices as a function of human character, as well as theological understandings of the human condition.

The ethicists at MACAE are committed to the application of values to concrete decision making, whether at the level of donor organization or grassroots communities. There is a vast agenda on the "ethics of the means" – but MACAE takes the position that there must be due attention given both on the character and significance of the goals themselves, as well as the processes and resources needed to realize goals and what ethical limits ought to be observed in pursuing development goals.
